ORIGINS: Sunstone is a plagioclase feldspar, which when viewed from certain directions exhibits a spangled appearance. It has been found in Southern Norway, Sweden, various United States localities and on some beaches along the midcoast of South Australia. Sunstone gems belong to the feldspar group, which encompasses a large variety of gemstone materials - including moonstone and amazonite. The sparkly metallic glitter in this particular feldspar is called aventurescence, which is caused by flat, reflective inclusions (sometimes called "schiller"). These inclusions can be hematite, copper or other minerals. Larger inclusions tend to be more glittery while small inclusions create a red or gold sheen on top of the stone's natural color. Not all sunstones contain aventurescence.

SPIRITUAL MEANING
Since "sun" is in this gemstone's name, it's no surprise sunstone is associated with the radiance of the sun and the energy it produces to sustain life. Sunstone is said to be a stone of leadership, encouraging the wearer to be open, benevolent and willing to bestow blessings upon others. Also known as a stone of joy, sunstone is believed to inspire good nature and an enjoyment of life. According to metaphysical beliefs, sunstone is highly effective in cleansing auras and chakras. Sunstone is predominantly associated with the Base and Sacral Chakras.

HEALING USES
Sunstone is mood lifting and anti-depressant. It supports a sense of self-worth, and allows us to let go of feelings of failure and to believe in luck and happiness again. On a wider level, it helps us to see the world, and the past, in a better light.

Oregon Sunstone is slightly lighter in feel and more powerful than ordinary sunstone. It creates a "fan" of golden light from the Solar Plexus up through the body. It enables a stronger flow of energy throughout the body and stimulates kidney energy (in the Chinese system). It connects with the subtle body while ordinary sunstone connects more with the physical. In Oregon Sunstone, the sparkle comes from inclusions of Copper rather than Hematite.

Sunstone is linked to luck and good fortune.  It clears and energizes all the chakras.  Sunstone instills good nature, heightens intuition and allows the real self to shine through happily. It dissipates fearfulness, alleviates stress and increases vitality.  Encourages independence and originality. Especially helpful to those who have difficulty saying “No” to others. Sunstone facilitates self-empowerment and independence. It acts as an antidepressant. Increases self worth and confidence.  Encourages optimism and enthusiasm. Stimulates self-healing powers.

Sunstone treats chronic sore throats, reduces stomach tension and relieves ulcers.  It treats cartilage and spinal problems.

HISTORY & LORE
One particular sunstone was found in ancient lava fields of Warner Valley. According to native legend, a great warrior was wounded by an arrow and his blood dripped onto the stones. The spirit of this warrior was carried into the stones and colored them with beautiful tones of red while also imbuing the gems with sacred power.

Sunstone has always fascinated throughout the ages. It has been appreciated for many properties related to its warm orange color. In ancient times, this shiny orange quartz was considered to have magical virtues. For example, the Scandinavian people, especially the Vikings, revered this stone. In Norse mythology, possessing this sunstone allowed easy access to Valhalla, the resting ground for slain warriors. Archaeologist Thorkild Ramskou made a hypothesis in 1967. Heliolite was reportedly found aboard a shipwreck. To him, it was a Viking heritage, which at the time, long before the invention of the compass, was used to aid in orientation at sea. Simply placing heliolite in front of one’s eye, looking towards the sky, could help one to find the sun’s position.

NOTE
Feldspars, including sunstone, do not react well to harsh cleaners such as bleach and should not be used in ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Exposure to sudden high heat is not recommended. The best method to clean sunstone is to simply use warm, soapy water. Ensure the stone and any jewelry settings are thoroughly dry before storing. Store sunstones away from other harder gemstones that could cause scratching along the surface.
